custom cage questions and breeding

tyler3400 Jul 19, 2005 07:44 PM

ok i want to get back into beardies and i would like to build a custom cage for them since any glass aquarium big enough is jsut really inconvenient.i want to house a 1.2 group. i am curious though if its ok to keep a 1.2 group together all year round? and what are the dimnesions for the cage. i figured i would build asomethign liek 5' long by 3' wide and 3' tall. does that sound adequeate for them as adults? if not then what size is better. thanks

To me this sounds fine, although some feel that you should only house together during the breeding season. If you do keep them together have 2 or 3 baskings spots, and I would remove them to feed them.Just my opinion.

ok thanks when i use to have beardies i would feed them pellets and a few superworms in a group but i put 2 dishes of each in. i usually feed my dragons by hand becasue i liek them to be tame and i have fond it a good way.if i was to get 2 female beardies that were from the same cluth could i raise them up together form young?

If you want the best situation for the dragons you will not consider housing a male with females. It would be best if you raised the females together in one large setup and the male in another. A male will raise the stress levels of the females. He will breed the females much to young if they are rasied together and cause them to have growth problems and develop MBD. Its really not in the best intrest of any of the animals. Often males will become breedong crazy and not eat or rest as long as he can see females. He will attack them several times a day and cause major sores on their necks and can even destroy their tails or cause them to loose fingers.

So, if you can't invest in the two tanks for the breeders you are going to have major issues buying the 30 tubs for all your babies! Just think of it as the smallest part of the breedong investment, and one of the most important.

Also, consider hte bearded dragon market is dead. Click on the link and check out my animals. I can't give them away and I have some GREAT colors and they are raised with the best of everything. I just had a sale where I cut the prices that they are listed at not in half and only sold a couple over 2 weeks. And I raise my dragons correctly using silkies, crickets, feeder roaches, greens, pellets and both UVB and natural sunlight. I don't cut corners or have weak or sick stock. I have some of the best in the industry in my opinion and I can't get any business.

Also, if you are breeding females then a few supers and some pellets won't cut it. My females eat around 50 crickets, 20 full grown silkies, and as many feeder roaches as I give them, plus tons of greens and pellets and occasional supers.

Supers are WAY too high in phosphorus fo be feeding many to gravid females. they distort the Calicum: Phos ratio and will lead to the girls getting MBD.

Just some considerations....

Below is one of those dragons I can't get rid of!

thanks very much for the help. if i was to keepp jsut to females together w/o any male at all would they have a high chance of becoming egg bound? and alos how much were you trying to get for the one in the pic?

kakadu Jul 21, 2005 08:15 PM

They are at less risk or becoming egg bound then if there was a male with them, but probably about the same risk as if they were housed alone. If you know the signs and watch your animals closely there is nothing to fear. They are not subtle about the desire to lay eggs at all, so as long as you pay some attention to their behavior then the risk is small. Any female is at risk of binding though I guess.

And, I don't think that I am allowed to post prices of animals on this forum, that would get the post deleted, but check it out by clicking my signature tab.
