Obese Turtles?

twilightfade212 Jul 19, 2005 09:35 PM

I've heard that turtles can get overweight. Any way to tell if they have too much fat on them? I'm not worried about my turtles, I was just curious. They eat their fill of typical veggies and fruits three times a week, and get a night crawler from me every now and then. Thanks a lot everyone.

One indicator would be that the turtle cannot close itself up completely into its shell. Gravid females won't be able to do this, of course, because of the eggs they carry, but an inability to close up isn't a surefire way to tell if a female is gravid.
That, and the turtle's actual weight. Does a turtle weigh more than usual? Some weight gain in the weeks leading up to hibernation is good.
We weigh ours regularly, so we can tell who is underweight, overweight, who might be sick or gravid, etc..
