Popularity of Dumerils Boas?

DavidKendrick Jul 20, 2005 09:42 AM

I have noticed a drop in polularity of the dumerils boa, I was wondering if anyone else has noticed the same? I go to shows and see that there are babies for sale, but not very many are sold, Have you guys (Dumerils breeders) noticed a drop in sales? Its amazing how such a beautiful boa, with med size, would not be on everyones wish list? I have also noticed that Morphs are taking over the industry, could it be that because there are no wild morphs of Dumerils that they are not as popular? I was just curious what others thought, and if they have noticed something different than what I have?

But I wouldn't say that the market is down at all. I had two up last week and they both sold and to different people. Of course, I didn't sell them online either, they sold locally.

I believe that Dumerils have done quite well in the market over the last five years as they have seen no drop in price. Even wholesalers sell them to pet shops for $125, that price has held for 5 years that I know of.

Something that caught me funny was a conversation that I had with a wholesaler friend of mine. He has been in business since 1977 and has probably seen more Dumerils than any of us. He had a trio of adults on his weekly list and I called him to see if any of them looked unique. His response, "all Dumerils look about the same".

This, to me, was truely a testament to their underappreaciated potiential. They have rich pattern and color diversity. As soon as breeders begin to refine the subtle differnces within the species, Dumerils will no doubt be the boa to have.

Currently, its impossible to compare them to Red-Tail boas, they cast a very long shadow.

I just bought my first Dumeril's 6 weeks ago (new born). Beautiful animals. This was my second boa and fifth snake. I also have a few lizards. I got mine for $125 and thought it was a bargain. It hasn't eaten yet, but I understand they can be a little finicky. I don't understand why they're not more popular either.

the m,arket on dumerils is strong it always has been, there a boa that produces smaller numbers then most others their size, thats why you dont see as many out there other than that sell just as well if not better then others within their price range, I have an easier time moving them then anything thing else. theres just not as many produced so you dont see as much vibe on them, nothing more
