Unexpected Parent and a few questions

Curtf Jul 20, 2005 12:09 PM

I got a huge surprise this last weekend. Eggs! I figured that since my female did not lay by late April or early May she wasn't going to. But, when I lifted her hide this last weekend to feed her, she was coiled around several eggs, about 6 or 7.
I got her away from the eggs and found that two on the bottom were bad (really soggy, smelly, etc) I was able to get one of the bad eggs away from the rest of the clutch, but the other one (which actually only has about half of it shrunken) is still stuck with the others. Here's the few questions:

1. I have the group of eggs in a rubbermaid container filled with vermiculite (sp?). The temp is about 88-89F. The humidity is about 85 - 90%. Are these OK temps and humidity levels?

2. The eggs are stuck togther in a bunch. I tried gently pulling them apart, but they won't budge. Will they be OK?

3. I was able to "candle" each egg in the bunch and the ones that appear to be OK (not the half shrivled one) show red with lots of veins (vasculature). Will the bad egg effect the other good eggs?

4. What would cause such a late lay? Is laying in mid July really that odd?

This is the first time I have eggs so I'm kinda stressed and want to do the best I can to make sure the eggs have the best chance to hatch.

Thanks for any advice!

Keep the humidity in the higher range. 89 is good.

Don't try to pull them apart. They should be fine.

You should not have any problems with healthy eggs.

Nope. In fact, I'm expecting eggs in August. However, my breeding season is normally over by the end of July - all animals have already hatched by then. I have a clutch due tonight.

Good luck!
