I found this snake in may of this year about 30 mi. south of tuscon. When I originally found it, I thought it was an atrox but now it almost looks like a mojave. I have asked a few people and have kind of got mixed answers so lets see what everyone else thinks. Could it be a hybrid? thanks for your help. By the way, I am sure I would have a better guess but this is the first time I have found either (western diamondback or mojave) so my experience w/ these particular crotes is minimal. That looks like an atrox to me. Cool snake.

I agree that it looks more atrox than anything. That area south of Tucson may have zones where hybridization occurs but in this case I think if there is any scute influence it is minimal in that animal.

Like I said, when I originally found it, I thought right away that it was an atrox. After a while, I dug up the pics and showed them to someone who said it looked a bit "scuteish". The one thing throwin me off is the hint of green in the ocular stripe. So I am glad I was right initially, at least unless someone suggests otherwise. Now its time to photograph a mojave. thanks for all of your input. rootsrok

I have caught hybrids, and they look like a slightly strange scut more than atrox. That snake also just looks like 100% atrox, and I've seen a few hundred (thousand?).
