Are monitors color blind?

Tann Jul 20, 2005 05:36 PM

I sat a white plate with mice and shrimp on it and Apollo tried attacking the plate before he discovered it had actual food items on it. He would litterally be inches away from a food item and try to bite down on the plate mutiple times.

was the plate warmer than the mice and shrimp?

It appears to me, most monitors have really poor eyesight up close, and really great eyesight at distance. With that in mind, that gives great reason for them to have snake touges and a jacobsons organ(extremely good sense of smell)

Its also good reason not to put ones tender parts up close to ones mouth, as movement is clearly seen.

So, they are great at smelling and seeing movement up close. But it appears non-moving items are poorly precieved. I believe they see them, but not very well. FR

Hi,
Yes, monitor lizards can see color - there are several related reports/books on same to support that they do and can see color = probably lower spectrum colors (i.e. red) better than higher ones (i.e. violet)...

That would explain FR why they'll see a cricket, run it down, only to loose it when it stops moving and then have to sniff it out. And no, the plate was not warm at all.
