Which snake will do best in this cage?

buffysmom Jul 20, 2005 06:46 PM

I need to move one of the following to a new cage: adult male corn (approx. 4 ft & 1 kilogram), a female Albino Sonoran Gopher (about the size of the corns & likely to get bigger) or a Hog Island male (about 4 feet, 900 grams & still young). The new cage is (I'm not sure of the gallon size) the length & width of a 20L, but double the height. I've built shelves into this cage, so the snake has about double the floor space, if it will utilize the shelves.
The question is: which of these snakes will be most likely to venture upward & get the benefit of the shelves, so he/she sort of has a cage with more floor space than a 20L?

i don't think any of them are real arboreal snakes but i would go with the corn snake. my ghost corn i house in a 40 gallon breeder size and he will climb around his branches i have in with him. i had a sonoran gopher and from what i read about them they can get to 6 foot long. they like to hide underground. i don't know how yours is but i sold mine. he/she just kept getting more aggitated the more i handled it. the hog island i believe would tend to stay on the ground since they get a bit thick and heavy but you could try it.

just my thoughts on what i would do..

Good thinking. I'd forgotten that the gopher is a burrower. I like mine. I think she's around a year old (I got her at a pet shop, where someone had sold her) & she's quite docile.
I'll give the corn a whirl in the new cage & see what he thinks of it.
