Feeding in or outside the cage?

dutch Jul 20, 2005 07:09 PM

I know everybody jumps off their chairs right now and want to tell me that feeding inside is best for minimum stress in the monitor etc... I am not an expert, but i aint a newcomer either. I have savs and albigs and use plain dirt as substrate, and i feed my 3foot savs mice. I know they can handle rats easily, but 4 small mice equals one rat and therefor giving my monitors 4times more exercise with chasing its prey. But it also means 4times more ingestion of dirt. I know in the wildlife they swallow some dirt, stummick autopsy on monitors in the wild have proven that, and i have no problems, but still i am concernt. Are there monitorkeepers that actually do have such problems? greetings, barry

Not sure what you mean by problems? I am guessing your talking about them eating dirt and looking at it in a human way. (i.e. ewww dirt in the mouth yuck)

Even humans could eat dirt if they so choose too. In some places humans do in fact eat dirt. The little bit that gets dusted over the mice isn't going to add up to much. Think of it as breaded chicken.

There are much more harmful things to worry about.
