I found several dark plastic bowls / containers at the 99 cent store. I decided to try a few of the dark brown tortilla containers. Worked great for the snakes and my dog loves the lids. Doesn't really care for frisbees but she loves the lids!

Would make Black Hides that had lids like a shoe box and a sliding door to secure(like a Neo vent)That way you could just close the door, remove the box and clean the cage (locking lid would be nice too!) Several different sizes, and we're set...
Most commercial ones I see are the type that slide all over the cage(too lite) and don't quite give the secure feeling you want for your animals.
And if the door was raised up on one of the sides you could fill one with spagnum and stack them allowing the snake to go to a warm dry or warm damp and cool dry and cool damp on the other.
I know many of us have done well in the past with a room that is kept warm without individual heating in the cages but sometimes I think to myself that we even give blankets to prisoners in cells so that they are not freezing in the air conditioning or the winter chills even though they would be fine without. I realize some habitats in the wild are fairly constant but I think many more are variable and maybe allowing our charges that minimal degree of choice is something we should think about. No Condemnation to anyone, just thinking...

All my rubbermaid and iris boxes are "painted" on the outside with artists gesso (white). Can be tinted to any color, or you can use "milk paint." Both dry in minutes and are non-toxic to reptiles.

To the animals that I could use for hide boxes? That would be great. I'm ignorant about this "milk paint" and the other one. Where would I get it? I have a "MICHEALS" near me. Can it be gotten in black or dark grey? I appreciate your post.
Bob.
