Oh that would be great they might be fantastic looking. I think the hybrid forum might be of better help.
As hybrids are growing in popularity. Great looking snake you have to.
I don't think you would be successful breding those two together. I think it would be easier to do more of an unatural cross. They exist in the wild togther and I have never heard of a MT king x coastal king cross. To many opportunties to have that happen in the past and it may be there is something that will keep those two from ever successfully producing viable eggs.
I could be wrong though.
Dear BlueRosy, "they exist in the wild together..." Where? I have not heard of this before. It seems the coastal population would be quite isolated from the pyros...atleast for several thousand years according to the literature. I am surprised that someone hasn't commented on this cross before, considering how many folks work with hybrids and the popularity of pyros and zonatas... (Both are beautiful animals...I would keep them separate...but to each his own)
Yo,
Bluerosy is right!!! Look more closely at the question. It says California King. I read that to mean a L. getula californiae and a L. pyromelana. And the two forms, L. g. californiae and L. zonata do indeed occupy some of the same space in some places of Calif. I caught both in Trabuco Canyon in Orange County Calif. some 37 years ago. Now if he had asked about crossing a California Mountain King with an Arizona Mountain King then you would have been on target. Now that I think about it, though, what is an Arizona King? There are three forms of getula in Arizona. Common names are a bear to work with but unless we use the scientific nomenclature we are lost if we are not careful.
Pat
Maybe not everywhere.
Here in the Prescott, Arizona area you can find both California Kingsnakes and Arizona Mountain Kingsnakes together. Why does that sound so strange?

Kerby...
Thanks Kerby!
I always forget just how far California Kings go into Arizona!
Pat
They are also found in eastern Arizona. I've found them near Winslow and Holbrook. And of course south from there. In southern Arizona it gets pretty mixed up as they do merge (California Kings, Desert Kings, Mexican Black Kings).
Kerby...
sorry for the mix up i meant to say california mountain king.....and arizona mountain king....ooops

Kerby...
I think he was talking about an az mountain king. And of course, they have been crossed. We did that in the early to mid seventies.
Also, by accident I did cross and are incubating the eggs of a Calking/tharyi cross. I was actually feeding the tharyi to the calking and he bred her instead. On her second clutch, I tried to breed her to another calking and he ate her, hahahahahahahaha. FR
on a human scale it has a sick sense of ironic humor. on a more natural level, just goes to show, anything oges.
sick sense of ironic humor.. thats frank for ya.
frank- saw a huge gopher coming back after the rains tonight on bopp. but once again, sisters didnt wanna stop. hopefully it made it off the road. tonight woulda been the night to go road crusin! we should do it soon.
It may be illegal in Cal, but nowhere else. Remember this is the worldwide net.
Also its only unethical to you. Not to everyone. There are no set ethics for breeding snakes. For instance, it may be unethical for Zoos thru AZA. But zoos only represent a very small minority of snake keepers and breeders. There may be more kingsnake keepers and breeders in one city, then all the zoos in AZA. So they do not represent all of us.
The truth is, if it blows that persons skirt up, then they should do it. You could remind them, to properly represent the offspring as crosses. But to tell them is illegal and unethical is wrong. FR
....Ha you missed it Frank...OK.... even an oletimer is entitled to miss a soft pitch once in awhile
The agenda here is.... control....do as I would do...not as you see might find interesting ....besides.... those pyro-natas might look alot like Kingston Mtns Ca tricolors....& we cant have that...nor the breeding of living jewelry....
I agree tho....documents of origin ought to accompany those hybrids forever...
look at the pic! That is a zonata (I assume his female) and I'm sure he's talking about a pyro (male) if he can't match it up. Not very hard to figure out. Where did the getula come in to the equation? Huh? As for the rest of the discussion, I'm not even going there, especially after this week!....lol.
Eimon
Sorry Eimon,
I live in a world of words where what I say and write is sometimes of critical importance. I have seen many posts with pictures that do not match the question. It's best not to assume but to ask for clarification. By the way--I really like your Website!!!! Great pictures there.
Pat
Pat, please don't think I was singling you out. It was just my tounge-in-cheek way of expressing a general observation on how some of these threads end up going sideways. It's all good.....most of the time...lol. I'd never dis a (former) So Cal guy, at least not you.
Eimon
