feeding time

my western hognose is about 1 year old, he still eats small pinkies and most of the time i'll give him dead pinks, rarley live, but every time he eats even when its alve he'll just start eating it, is he supose to do this? i thought the had to chew the venom in but he just starts eating...

It has been hotly debated on this forum whether or not hognoses are venomous, even in the most technical form. I am sure that hognoses eat much larger prey in the wild, which would require some "chewing" action to get it down.

Even truly venomous snakes won't bother envenomating pinkies some of the time. So it doesn't suprise me that a hognose wouldn't bother either. Although I did see mine 'chewing' back when he ate live pinks.
