To breed or not to breed

Melisssss Jul 21, 2005 10:11 AM

I have recently purchased a male BP that has no fancy morph name or anything like that. I have no breeding records for him other than he is a captive bread male that is about 10 months old. After spending a lot of time reading these forums I notice that people who breed are always breeding to a normal female. My question would be can you breed to this male who I have now genetic background on with a female? I don't have a female yet and have plenty of studying to do on the subject before diving into breeding.

My questions would be:

1. What would I be getting into if breeding him?
2. Should be be bred to a fancy female or another generic BP? What are disadvantages and advantages of both?
3. Should I not breed this guy since I have limited infor on him?

This is a picture of my guy. He's so sweet!

Well for one he looks alittle small to be breeding yet..

1. What would I be getting into if breeding him? Just be prepared which basically means have a incubator, and a thermometer/hygrometer to regulate heat and humidity and alot more knowledge of the breeding process and incubation techniques..

2. Should be be bred to a fancy female or another generic BP? What are disadvantages and advantages of both? "Generic BP"?? I take it you mean another normal. Well if he was bred to a normal female you would produce all normal babies.. And if he is breed to a fancy normal female you will produce nicer quality normal ball pythons.. The only way to get a morph out of breeding him is breed him to something like a pastel female or such...

3. Should I not breed this guy since I have limited info on him? You need more info on breeding ball pythons all together. Check out some caresheets on the main page at kingsnake.com so you know what your doing.. You also need a large adult female to breed him to. And as I said before he maybe be about right age to breed but in my opinion to small.. Feed him up and get alot more info on balls then if you want try breeding him to a of age and wieght female....

Oh I should have stated that this is something I would consider down the road. I agree he is not old enough now. I have much research to do if I decide I am going to head down this road. Luckily for me, I enjoy this type of learning and have the time to do it.

There is nothing wrong with breeding normals.Captive bred animals are always a good thing. However i think you will find that people are using traited males as to create more genetically mutated animals with normal(less expensive)females.

In other words...any normal males you hatch will be pet quality only.(Females are always in demand though)

Would be good practice.
If you are successful,then...maybe move on to an expensive genetically traited male.
