Prolaps in VERY gravid female Dragon

wfreptiles Jul 21, 2005 11:04 AM

I have a very gravid female dragon who appears to have a prolaps. There is no internal organs sticking out but rectal/ventral skin is protruding. Can't get her into the vet till monday. What can I do in the meantime? Am I going to loose her and the clutch? She looks like she is ready to explode. She digs in her egg laying box but doesn't lay any eggs.
Any help or advise would be appriciated.
Thanks
Becky

Im not sure, but maybe its just her getting ready to lay and not actually a prolapse?

When i first bred my female a few nights before she lay she was running around frantically and her vent appeared to be pulsing and appeared to actually be "comming out". Its hard to explain, but i think if she had not been contracting and had just been sitting there it would have definately looked like a prolapse. Maybe that is what you are seeing?

Other than that, until you can get to the vet, keep it clean and hydrated. Sugar water soaks or milksoaked paper towel wraps work well to keep the area hydrated. if she is on a sand or sand like substrate keep her on paper towels (of course, except for her nest box) until you can get to the vet.

Good luck!!

Try to get some more calcium down her, disolved in water if you have to and feed with a dropper, that will stimulate her going.

It sounds like an egg is caught and either she can not pass it or she does not feel the laying area is suitable.

Try several substrates, just because some lay in a soil mix, does not mean all will lay in them. We have one girl that will ONLY lay in moist warm playsand and the area should be twice their length and ones their height in substate.

Thanks for everyone's help. I have been keeping her on non abrasive materials and keeping the protrusion moist so it doesn't become irritated. She laid 20 pretty large eggs for me last night, the protrusion does't seem as bad. I am hoping by Monday she will be back to normal since the preasure in that area has been relieved.
Thanks for all the advise.
