subspecies difference

sutorherp1 Jul 21, 2005 04:47 PM

Is it just me, or do the subspecies of D. auratus differ in sizes? By size I mean: it seems to me that the portabella or typical black and green auratus seem to be fatter ( I know its not PC but, sorry) in the stomach region, while the "six spot" or spotted auratus seem to have a higher back bone or something...they seem thinner from left side to right side, but "taller" from belly to back. Is this a difference in the subspecies or individual frogs/collections/bloodlines etc.?

Hi Sean,
Quick easy answer is yes, there is always a difference, however large or small, in sub species. All tincs are the same specie, all pumilio, all auratus, ect. , but there are many sub-species .This is the reason for keeping them separate and not mixing (hybridizing, bad, bad, bad ) a sub- specie.

Ok, I was just wondering if it was an individual frog difference or subspecial (if thats a word...?). I've previously asked about mixing species in an enclosure and hybridization seemed to be the real big NO factor for introducing other species. Thanks,
-Sean
