I found some toads and was wondering if I had found a pair or not. how can I tell if I did or not?

I found some toads and was wondering if I had found a pair or not. how can I tell if I did or not?

Depends on the species. A lot of species, the males will have a differently colored throat- such as male Gulf Coast Toads (Bufo valliceps) have a yellow or greenish throat while the females throat is white like the rest of the underbelly. Males tend to call more often than females (I have yet to get a female to call at all.) Finally, if it is breeding season, in some species (again, the gulf coast toad for example) the male will have nuptial pads on the front feet (dark callousy parts on the feet that are used for clasping in mating.) Don't confuse this with the digging tubercles of spadefoots and texas toads, though. Best thing to do is look up the species and go from there. This site might help (if you are from or near texas):
