Ball pythons for profit or hobby?!

wlinville Jul 21, 2005 09:55 PM

I was just wondering how many peoples primary motivation for buying ball pythons with special genetic traits do so because they are cool or because they hope to make money. Now most of us can say XYZ is awesome and I own one because they are neat, but would you have bought it if you knew you could never breed it or sell the offspring? I have some that the only reason in my mind I can justify the kind of money I spent is because I have a shot of return on my investment, and then some.

Now don’t blow this out of proportion, I love my snakes and spend a ton of time and money on them even if they are normal, and will never make a dime.I was just wondering how many peoples primary motivation for buying ball pythons with special genetic traits do so because they are cool or because they hope to make money. i do not currently breed balls, but i plan to do so. my goal is to own a few morphs as pets, but i realize the only way to afford that is to first breed them. i think a lot of people do this, at least at first. i do not plan on making a living doin this. sellin a few snakes for a few thousand dollars is fine with me. best of luck in your adventures.

basically I own a modest collection of bp's appr. 30 animals. Most are normal females with a couple norm males. I do have a collection of het's 2.1 het pieds, 1.1 het albino's, 1.0 citrus ghost (picking a female in daytona). I care for each one as if they were one of my more expensive animals. The one thing that the morphs will allow me to do is provide top notch care for my collection. If in 3 yr's I make a few thousand dollars then great. If I only make enough to pay for my hobby, well that's great too. will it be nice to be able to suppliment my income with 10-20-30 thousand, heck yeah. Is that a possibility, if i work hard and do all my breeding properly and purchase the right morphs in the next few yrs it is. So basically I own the morphs to pay for the hobby and they are some of the coolest looking snakes around.. Just my 2 cents. Josh Hutto

Heya Ben,honestly Deal said it best...

"my goal is to own a few morphs as pets, but i realize the only way to afford that is to first breed them."

Thats the whole reason that they are the prices that they are as well.So to try to seperate something so intertwined as ball morphs and money..?...well thats a toughie.
