question, please respond quickly!!!!!!

I just built my first rack for hatchlings and one for sub'adult-adult balls. well on the hatchling rack it is built around sterlite 12q's. I measured and added the 1/8 gap for the tape and easy clearance but didn't take into the gap where the top latches. that extra gap adds another 1/8 or so which leaves a 1/4 gap or a little more. the question is, has anyone ever had a hatchling squeeze through an opening that small. I've watched a couple explore it but not really try to push through. Just courious as I'm tempted to take them out of the rack until i can put a 1/8 spacer if i need to. any help will be greatly appreciated. All the hatchlings are about 100-175 gms now. Thanks in advance. Josh Hutto

I drill 1/4" holes in my hatchling rubbermaids for ventilation (in addition to the gap inbetween the rubbermaid and top of the rack). I haven't had a ball get out of a 1/4" hole. I think they'd have to be in around 30 grams are so to get their big heads out the holes. You shouldn't have a problem........especially with animals in the 100 gram range.

Corey

thanks for the quick reply. I was totally freaking out having put my het pied female in there, a $1500 snake is way to expensive to loose when your future collection is riding on her, lol. Just to be safe I went ahead and fed all my smaller snakes 1 day ahead of feeding day so they couldn't squeeze out, lol. Thanks again, Josh Hutto

Normally I would have said you are ok - but when my Harry escaped it was out a gap in the top of his tank about 1/3 of inch big, he was about 250 grams or slightly more at the time - never under estimate their power to squeeze out those tiny gaps! 1/4 inch holes are ok but gaps allow more area to squeeze out of. I'd say you are 95% ok.
