question.. please answer quickly !!!!

I just built my first rack for hatchlings and one for sub'adult-adult balls. well on the hatchling rack it is built around sterlite 12q's. I measured and added the 1/8 gap for the tape and easy clearance but didn't take into the gap where the top latches. that extra gap adds another 1/8 or so which leaves a 1/4 gap or a little more. the question is, has anyone ever had a hatchling squeeze through an opening that small. I've watched a couple explore it but not really try to push through. Just courious as I'm tempted to take them out of the rack until i can put a 1/8 spacer if i need to. any help will be greatly appreciated. All the hatchlings are about 100-175 gms now. Thanks in advance. Josh Hutto

I would follow your instincts and remove them until you can get the spacers in. Snakes are used to squeezing out of tight spots.

Just to clarify what you are saying, your boxes do not fit in with the lids on as planned and if you remove the lids the boxes then have a 1/4" gap?

That is likely too much, although you'd be surprised at just how large of a gap you can get away with.

No big deal, just shim the boxes up with some Sintra.

I had planned to have the boxes slide in without the tops on them. I left an 1/8" gap around the boxes for clearance for heat tape. however with the 12q sterlite boxes, they have a small gap in the middle where the tops latch down. that gap caused about a 1/4" gap in the middle of the front and back. I checked on them all night and found that one of the smaller babies did actually get out (found in 5 mins) so I took all the 12q's out and placed the lids back on them and placed the tubs on my shelving unit. I will be adding a 1/8" place of backer board on each shelf to see if that corrects the problem and allows easy sliding motion with the heat tape on it. Thanks for the reply's everyone, Josh Hutto
