Storage tubs as cages

vegasbilly Jul 21, 2005 10:44 PM

I'm thinking of using Sterelite or similar tubs for a couple of my adult Chondros and juvenile Scrubs. To you that use them, how do you heat them? I live in Las Vegas so its not of paramount importance but will be come October.

Also, as far as ventilation goes, cut-outs w/screens or drilled ventilation holes? Also, any pics/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

HIHI!!! I had to say hello, I am in Las Vegas too. Are you a member of the southern nevada herp society? I haven't joined yet but plan to.

Anyways...

I have my new pair of GTPs currently in tubs as quaratine tanks (I'll be putting them into display cages in another few months). The tubs work fine, I drilled out vent holes on both ends. I currently just use a human heating pad set on low with a thermostat on one end, keeps the temps perfectly in the mid 80s during the day and 78 at night. (I keep the AC on our house to a constant 81 degrees day and night. The vent in that room is only half open.) I do cover the windows in the snake and quarantine rooms to keep the hot sun from heating up the rooms.

Not a great pic... but kind of shows the tub... this was what I set up for him, but after he got here and I realized how large he was I made his quartine two tubs stacked together so he had more space. Eventual display cages will be 24x20x20".

I used papertowels at first to check for mites, I have since switched to the shredded coconut bark per advise I got here.

hope some of that helps...
cool to know another GTP keeper in the city.

Hi April!

Yes I am a member but rarely attend. Ken Foose at Exotic Pets runs the club I'm sure you know Ken..most Vegas herpers do. Thanks for the response, drop me an email (billhughes@msn.com) and we can compare notes etc.

For space reasons I kept adult pairs in Visions and noticed an almost immediate decline in feeding response. I separated the males to tubs on Friday and all are back to their agressive selves! By this fall I will house them all individualy in Barrs cages - my personal favorites, and move my Scrubs into the Visions as they are rapidly outgrowing their tubs.

Im in Vegas too. One block from the Strip, Koval Lane. I would love to meet other people interested Chondros and other herps locally.

I also have a WC Panamint 0.0.1, a kingsnake0.0.1, and 1.1 Jungles. You guys go out lookin'?

I keep my Chondro and Jungles in Rubbermaids with a couple of rows of 1/8 inche holes for ventilation. On the larger cages I also use clips on the sides to insure that they stay locked. Make sure that you have the locks on well or they will get out. I used a Dewalt rotory tool to cut a 6 1/2 inch hole in the top for the lamp I use. I put a screen on top of that that I bolted down with 1/2 bolts and washers. I use a 40 watt bulb in a 45 qt. container without a thermastat and the temps stay about 84 on the cool side and mid 90s on the warm. Are apt. is kept about 80 right now.
