small male veiled

geeboo Jul 16, 2003 12:56 AM

Question,
I have had my male veiled (cham) for 1.5 years now he is in the most extremely healthy condition I know that a chameleon can be in. Eats all the time, poops great, loves being misted and handled. Thing is he is only like 5.5 to 6 inches snout to vent. I know this is not a very big size for a male veiled. Has anybody ever expierenced this. Do you think he is just some kind of dwarf. Not worried about him for any reason just curious.

As long as he's healthy and acting normally he's probably just a small individual. I find many captive bred chams are smaller than the sizes often recorded for their species in the wild. There are probably many nutrients we just can't reproduce in captive diets, and the amount of physical exercise a wild one would get is much different. There's most likely some genetic selection going on in wild populations too...larger brighter males get more females to carry on their traits. I've seen many smaller veileds who were just beautiful. Chams can vary in size like any other creature.
