Fire Skinks

Ophiophthalmos Jul 22, 2005 08:48 AM

I'm mainly a snake fancier, but have got interested in skinks also - especially fire skinks. I bought one recently who is eating well, and looks great.

What is the best kind of substrate for this kind of animal?
Is a commercial reptile bark made from fir bark acceptable?

I've been trying to get him accustomed to eat off a paper plate, but he always waits until the food crawls onto the substrate, then eats it.

Is there any problem with intestinal impaction if bits of bark are swallowed?

I use newspaper or paper towels on my snakes.

Fire skinks like to burrow. They are on the shy side so a good hide is critical. I keep mine on EcoEarth, or shredded coconut fiber. Mine doesnt like to hunt crix and prefers a variety of worms. Mealies, waxies, silkworms...

I put them in a little escape proof bowl. He also loves the water so I have a big water bowl that he can get in...have to change the water a lot..but oh well...
