Where's the poop go?

Melisssss Jul 22, 2005 10:51 AM

I have had my BP for about 3 weeks now and am noticing things are different with them than rat snakes. I have fed him 2x now, 1 sm mouse each time (knocked out but otherwise live mice) and he hasn;t pooped. He did poop 2 days after I first got him. With my rat, you feed him and 3 days later you have poop but not with the BP. Should I be worried? Should I not feed him until he goes?

I admit I worry A LOT but I take my pets very seriously and like to know things are going well. He's about 9-10 months old and unfortunately I don't know what he weighs (still looking for a scale.) I'd say he's around 24" maybe a little more.

My BP ate his first mouse 1-1/2 weeks back after not eating for 8 weeks (so I know he was empty when I got him) and no waste yet. Judging from this size, he could probably handle a small rat, so I would have thought it'd take even less time.

What's an average amount of time for the whole process?

Don't you secretly hope we have magical snakes that don't have to poop?

LOL, at least they don't go as often as dogs and cats

That is why I love snakes! I have 2 dogs, 2 birds, 2 snakes and my son has 2 Leopard Geckos not to mention a tank full of fish and feeder mice. Out of all of them the snakes are BY FAR the least amount of poop and trouble. My dogs will be replaced with snakes when they die for this very reason; probably the birds too. We're going all reptile here

If or when my BP decides to go for f/t the stinky mice will be gone too. Right now that is one giant big pipedream since he won't even smell a f/t rat or mouse.

I have a CH Cairn Terrier and a mutt Chihuahua and both are spoiled rotten. I showed the Cairn to his Championship myself. I was quite proud of myself having never shown an animal before. Believe me, they run the roost here. I get on them but they are my buddies. I really love the Caiorn when he kills all those ground moles in the yard. I always give him a nice raw hamburger when he gets two or more a day.

Pythons are some of the most efficient reptiles. I remember reading a summary of a journal article in Vivarium magazine that stated that pythons get more usuable energy from their food than most other reptiles. It just takes longer for them to have enough waste to eliminate as it does for other snakes. They just use most of the mouse, so there is not a lot to come out the other end. I also wish my dog was so efficient.

I thought that may be the case just by a stool comparison between my two snakes but really wasn't sure. I did give him a little soak yesterday just to be on the safeside until I could ask here today. He didn't go, so I posted. They are quite amazing animals. I was terrified of them not long ago by they are quickly becoming one of my favorites. I am reading everything I can get my hands on atm.
