is it that they live in different areas in south america or is it color/personaliy? i've been looking at getting one or two for some time and just want to make sure about what i'm getting into. ohh and i was also wondering if its better to get a couple babies or a couple adults(sorry stupid Q, im positive its gonna be babies). i also wanted to know if chondro is just a nicname for GTPs or what, ive heard it a lot but not sure. also under the care articles the page about GTPs is really handy!
cheers

before you get a Chondro you need to make sure you knwo what your doing... you need to know what things these snakes require...
adults are usually easier for your first chondro but not always available... babies can sometimes be problem feeders...
always try to get Captive Bred snake... trust me you dont want to deal with a sick snake for your first Chondro...

these snakes are from Papa New Guenne... and the surrounding islands and the tip of Australia... understanding the localty helps...

"but still whats a biak, aru, sorong, and sariname"

well those are different localities.. (ie, diff islands, diff areas of australia)
Sariname.. do you mean Surinam? That is in south america and there aren't surinam GTPs (that I know of!!)

Also, locality is not easy to prove and claiming a snake is a specific locality without proof or genelogical records is basically worthless. I have been told to call them 'type' as in "Jayapura Type" or better yet, just call them GTPs!
Locality is not a guarantee for looks or temperment either, although from what I have noticed there are general types from locals, gtps are so highly variarble, going by coloration alone is not a guarantee. check out finegtps . com for lots of great info.

They come from different localities, such as Aru and Biak which are names of islands. Many Local names are for towns from which animals are shipped. They don't come from South America they come from Indonesia. Suriname is a local often used for Emerald tree Boa which are from South America, big difference between GTPs and ETBs. Chondro is the old scientific name for GTPs but is still used by most who know these animals.

Chondros are not beginner snakes and you should do as much research as you can before buying any animal. I'd suggest you start with adult or young adults before taking on a baby. There are pages and pages of info out there on these guys just type in say- Aru Green tree Python-or just- Green tree Python- and you'll get more hits than you can look at any time soon.

As for locality as has been mentioned in this thread it is probably better to say Type as there are few documented locality animals out there.

Do your research it will save you time money and heart ache.

I might suggest Greg Maxwell's book The Complete Chondro as a start. I did quite a bit of research before buying and I purchased his book too. It's invaluable as a tool, and I refer to it often.
