caging question

buffysmom Jul 22, 2005 02:29 PM

I need to move some of my snakes around. I'm wondering if my adult male corn will use some vertical shelf space if I put him in a higher cage? I know they're generally terrestrial snakes, but if there are platforms that cover about 1/2 the length of the cage, will he use those?

>>But probably not a lot. If any maybe at night.
I used to have several aquariums that I added shelves to.
They were hardly ever used. I would say maybe once or twice that I saw.
The corns just seemed to prefer the bottom of the tank and cover.

I have two 3 foot high vivs, with wide shelves at 18 inches and 2 feet. Some of my Corns spend most of their time up there, one chooses to stay on the ground and only ventures up occasionally. They also have climbing branches, but they don't seem to need them in order to move around the shelves.

I use very light materials for the high hides - hanging basket liners (essentially just papier mache) and thin cardboard boxes. That way the snake still feels secure but nobody gets hurt if a hide is knocked off the shelves.

Variety is the spice of life. You could give yours the option and see what happens. You never know - they might like it.

I'm not sure I am picturing this right but it sounds pretty interesting.
Do you have hides on the shelves?
I didn't think of that, I just had bare shelves.
Maybe a more secure high spot would be readily used.
I like that.

That's right - I have the lightweight cardboard hides up on the shelves. They can't be cleaned, but they're cheap to throw away and replace. Also some plastic foliage to provide more cover.

This year, I've scattered a few laying boxes around the vivs and all the females that laid, have gone for the ones up on the shelves.

Thanks, Kel. I also hadn't thought about providing hides on the higher shelves. I'll try my corn in the vertical cage w/ some high hides & see what he thinks.

Corn Snakes and other Rat Snakes can be arboreal. He will most likely use them a little bit.

Well, he was completely uninterested in the highest shelf, so I removed it as it made access to the rest of the cage difficult for me. But, he is currently sleeping in his hide on the lower shelf. So at least he got a little more usable space out of the vertical height. Thanks everyone.
