Sexing / popping question

z10silver Jul 22, 2005 03:21 PM

Hello, I recently posted this in the milksnake forum but didn't get any responses, so I'm hoping I could get some help here. Thanks!

I plan on breeding milksnakes for the first time in the near future. (Albino nelsoni). I was hoping someone here could direct me how to correctly pop babies to determine sex, or if perhaps there is another way to distinguish sex without popping. I have read a few places that say basically "squeeze the base of the tail" but I dont feel like this is enough info. for me to do it safely. Where exactly on the tail? How much pressure should I use? Should I press in a certain direction? I wish there was someone who could show me in person but so far no luck.

Thank you for help in advance,

Zach

My advice would be to get the snake(s) to someone who is experienced in sexing snakes and get them to pop them for you, or probe them (which as far as I know is the only 100 percent way to accurately sex a snake.)Either method could potentially be harmful to the snake if done wrong.

Also, sometimes you can tell a female by the taper of their body to their tail, but this is DEFINITELY not an accurate way of knowing, because there are many factors that could effect that theory.
