Feeding ?

guyinaz Jul 22, 2005 05:54 PM

Hey, thought I should ask this. I have a 6' burm about 12" in diameter and wanted to know if this would be a good sized meal for her to grow nice and big(she's maybe a year /- couple months).

One every 2 weeks I'm guessing since she's used to 2 jumbo rats a week and that's barely anything IMO. Also, she's grown almost a foot in the month I've had her only feeding her the 2 rats a week, so she is getting plenty of food(enough to grow that much atleast).

Seems a bit much for a 6' snake but I'm far from an expert and could be wrong.

I would say first move onto jumbo or collosal rats, perhaps two every 10 days. Once your snake reaches about 8 or 9 feet I would say go for the rabbits every two weeks. This is what I did with my girl and she's growing very well. I hope this helps.

The general rule I've heard is nothing larger around than your snake. Makes sense to me. I tried feeding him a rabbit about 1.5 times the size of my snake and he had problems. Took over an hour and ripped the side of his mouth. I won't make that mistake again.

I went ahead and fed her the little white/brown one up top today. Took maybe 20mins total, which is about the same for the 2 rats. She now has a very sore jaw and a buldge in her that's pretty big. I think it ended up being about 1.5x her size.

That is what you don't want. I have a 12 foot albino and she only eat a little smaller than the siz of the rabbit in the picture. and my burm grows just fine. just keep in mind if you will not eat it then more than likely your snake will not either.
