Guinea pigs???

geeboo Jul 16, 2003 02:41 AM

Does anybody feed guinea pigs. I see them to have too much hair. I was feeding my female bci large rats but they are just not big enouph anymore and she is hungry in like 3 or 4 days roaming the cage and getting ready to eat whenever I opened the cage to clean. Had to watch out LOL. I fed her about a 2 pound rabbit last week and she did extremely well with it. It has actually put a bit of a bulge in her again. Rats were not doing the number. Anyhow before I get way off topic here rabbits are few and far between for me in the size that I need to feed her and I don't really like the idea of guinea pigs. What do you guys do when they are at this size where nothing is the right size to feed?

We have used them on and off for some time but really feel that Jumbo Rats do seem to have more fat content. This is not to say that Guinea pigs are not an acceptable food source for your animals. One other observation that I have mad in reference to the pigs is that they seem to take longer to digest......This could be due to their thick skull. Good luck and I hope this helps!

Hey there,
I've fed guinea pigs to my largest BCI, but not as her sole
food source (she's only gotten 3 in the past 2 years) She
was taking 2 jumbo rats every 2 weeks or so which gets quite
expensive (esp w/out a freezer to buy in bulk! lol), so I
had been trying other food sources. I have heard some snakes
can become picky and start to only want the guinea pigs, so I
only use them for variety. Typically now she just gets one small
or med. rabbit and that lasts 20-25 days before she needs
to eat again. (same with the guinea pig, about 20 or so days with
a large one)
Luckily becase of me and a mutliple-burmese owner my local
reptile store stocks frozen rabbits now.

I have fed my het for albino's guini pigs and a mixture of other food for a couple of years with no problems, Ive only heard that the long hair pigs might cause indigestion problems but im not sure how true this is. I have trouble getting food here in finland, I get mice from the zoo and the guini pigs. they have no trouble digesting the pigs at all, I only feed every 2 or so weeks anyway. When I think of what boas will eat in the wild I dont thing guini pigs will cause a problem, BUT I do think that variety is best, even if you feed rats all the time, the occasional OTHER food item wont do any harm.

hope this helps
