good first snake...

julianstoked Jul 22, 2005 08:36 PM

I was curious what would be a good first snake for myself? I think snakes may become a hobby of mine. I am just looking for a great starter. I am looking for non-agressive one that won't grow larger than 10 feet or so.

My girlfriend is also worried because we have a small dog, but I will make sure to get a good locked cage.

I have had two ball pythons when I was younger, but it wasn't really my job to care for them.

a cal king is a good first choice but another to consider is the african house snake.they require basicly the same care as cal kings and if you eventually decide to breed them they will breed year round.albinos are also starting to become more common as are other color morphs.there is a care sheet on kingsnake also that is very good.hope this helps

My opinion.. ive had everything except calis and just dont like them.. corn snake... colorful, calm, always wanting to eat? what is better then that. and all the morphs these days are unbelievable.. and then theres the ball python... meduim size great eater just not W.C ones and another is western hog.. get them when there a year or older babies are hard to get to eat, but once they do..theres not stopping, small size and turned up snout very awesome snake... these are my favorites and another that is great is everglades rat snake.. a little aggressive at times though..

I am all for the corn snakes. Just got one myself and it is awesome, easy to care for and tolerates handling. Also apparently easy to breed. oh, and they get around 5 feet long.
some very awesome color variations also
