First Kingsnake Double Clutch

Sasheena Jul 22, 2005 08:53 PM

Well one of my Cal Kings decided to double clutch without any encouragement from me.

Was cleaning cages today and feeding my snakes when I saw a bunch of white lumps in my Cal King Euphrates' enclosure. I said "huh?" and took a closer look. 50 days ago she laid 7 huge eggs, and sometime today she laid 7 more eggs and a slug. The slug was hard on one side but still wet and slimy on the other side, and the eggs in this clutch are half the size of the previous clutch, but I thought it was pretty cool to discover, especially since I did not re-introduce her to the male! Luckily for her I was lazy about taking her lay box out. I had left it in the last few times I changed cages because she seemed to always be hanging out in it (hint hint)

Anyway, I thought I would share!

Here's an old picture of her:

Sasheena,

That is awesome to hear ... how are the other eggs doing? I have a feeling you are glad also and will take the best care of the new eggs.

Hey there, I am glad for the new eggs.

My clutches are getting very close to hatching. Here they are and their status:

Clutch #1 - #3 and Clutch #9 are all cornsnake eggs

Clutch #4 - Female is Tigris (aberrant banded Cal King) bred to Bishop (High White). This was her first clutch She laid three eggs then got egg bound and then prolapsed her oviduct laying her 4th egg. I treated her at home and she pulled herself together, and laid four more eggs. Four of the five she laid after going egg-bound didn't make it, and so I have four eggs ready to hatch at any moment. Today is day 61 for the first three eggs, 58 for the last egg.

Clutch #5 - FEmale is Licorice (Desert phase banded) bred to Jester (Desert phase aberrant banded). She laid 16 eggs 55 days ago, one went bad in the first week of incubation, another in the second week, and one is starting to collapse (but it IS day 55 afterall!) so the 14 remaining seem like they are still good.

Clutch #6 - FEmale is Pegasus (aberrant banded/striped albino) bred to Bishop (high white). She laid 7 eggs (her first clutch) 55 days ago and Bishop is a possible het for albino, so I might get some albino kings from this clutch!

Clutch #7 - Female is Euphrates (ABerrant banded) bred to Jester (aberrant banded). She laid 7 monstrous eggs 51 days ago. I checked her eggs yesterday and the largest egg in the bunch was covered in sweat which I believe means it has died. I dried it off and left it in the egg box... just in case.

Clutch #8 - Female is Queenie ("Dot Dash" Newport Cal King) bred to Jester (aberrant banded). She laid 11 eggs 50 days ago. She and Licorice were my only proven breeders, the others were all first timers. She's a possible het for albino, and Jester is a possible het for albino... the last two years I've bred her to Bishop (also poss. het) and didn't get any albinos. So I think that either she isn't het, or Bishop isn't het.

Clutch #10 - Female is Euphrates, she wasn't rebred to any of my cal kings for her second clutch, so must have retained sperm from Jester earlier in the year. She laid 7 eggs ONE day ago! (all that waiting! argh!)

I am very much looking forward to the "spurt" of babies I'll be having.... Life is getting hectic!

Hey, nice to see you too! Been a tad too much bickering on here, haven't felt like I could say much of anything, so I've kept my mouth shut.

You know... have had some interesting thoughts about a lot of the posts. Especially about what might be the best way to prepare a laying box, or incubate eggs. I have learned a lot but havne't had much to say since too many people on here seem to feel it is their duty to jump down the throat of anyone who does it different than they do themselves.

In any case, I"m around, just listening.

I for one would love to hear your nesting practices, as it seems you have had a pretty good year with some few binding issues. I like the variety and will only be able to add comment next year with MBK, Mex. milk and Southern plains rats.

This year I just gave each snake that was gravid a very large rubbermaid container filled to the top with humid sphagnum peat moss. It was deep enough for the kings to bury themselves completely. Seemed to be successful for them. Next year I might give them even MORE sphagnum peat moss for them to bury themselves in as suggestions to that effect appear to be worthwhile and it doesn't hurt to try that anyway!
