Wrong setup for babies?

buffysmom Jul 23, 2005 12:14 AM

I have a batch of C. Pyrrhogaster babies, recently morphed. I had them on cocoa fiber, but today moved them to a setup of sloped gravel w/ a water section. Now 5 of the 8 have climbed way up the side of the enclosure. They were not climbing the sides in the cocoa fiber setup. Does this mean they don't like the new setup & I should switch back?

Hmm, maybe it would be a good idea to change them back. Another thing that can make new morphs climb the walls is too high if a temperature or dirty water or conditions. Either way, I'd try to switch them back first, and if that doesn't seem to help, perhaps lower the temp a little.

Thanks. I did switch them to back to an ecoearth-based setup with a little gravel-bottomed "pool" in it. They seem much happier- no wall climbing.

That sounds great that they are doing better. I just wanted to add that I thought the pH of the coconut husks was a bit harsh on amphibians. I don't know this for sure but it might be something to check out

I'd never heard that before & all the care sheets I've read for my other amphibians recommends cocoa fiber as a possible substrate. I've used it for my frog for years. Is there documentation somewhere about it possibly being an issue?

I think you're confusing cocoa fiber with peat moss. Cocoa fiber's a good substrate. I mix mine with topsoil for my fossoral sals. It holds up to burrowing better.
