Janie is too smart!

PHRatz Jul 23, 2005 10:30 AM

We weren't home in the evening Thurs. so I didn't see Janie out hunting for food. Yesterday evening we were gone again & didn't get home until about an hour before sunset. She saw us before we saw her, as we were unlocking the front door she was already chasing after us.
We have a dachshund, because of his long back he has always had a ramp to use for getting up & down the porch. We don't want him using steps for fear he'll hurt his back.
All the box turtles know how to get down the ramp if they've been fed on the porch, all of them use it.

Janie is the first one to walk up the ramp. I fed her a mixture of foods then after she ate everything I'd given her I picked her up & put her near the puddle I'd made by a tree so she could soak, she did soak & get a drink of water.
Apparently she was still hungry because as she stood by the tree she looked at me standing on the porch then she walked right back up the ramp to demand more food.
This time I handed her a cockroach (I breed them for herp food) which she grabbed & took with her down the ramp. She ate it when she got to the ground. She was finally full & went off to do whatever she wanted to do.
What a character!! I wonder what they think about this giant creature handing out live bugs? "How easy is that, I don't even have to hunt them this giant thing has them ready for me on a plate." lol

Janie freaks me out almost daily. She didn't leave here when she had the choice to do it then she moved in under the house. So on days when I'm feeding them I can knock on the house, tell her it's dinner time, then 2-3 minutes later she'll appear.
After all the days of her chasing me for food in the last 6 weeks she then figured it out about walking up the ramp..that really cracked us up.

When I think about how close she came to being roadkill I am so greatful that we happened to see her that evening. She is too awesome!
