There is a book by the late Sean McKeown that covers all the herps in the Hawaiian islands. He used to be the reptile curator at the Honolulu zoo. Back then even the zoo was allowed only one snake. Practically everything is non native and introduced. As of late the Old World Chameleons have really established themselves.

I went to Maui last year and there were plenty of house geckos and anoles right around our complex. I also saw "Bufo" toads(I think that's what the locals call them) every night. I believe that they are cane toads, but I have no idea if there is some subtle difference or which name is correct.

I really wanted to see a Jacksons Chameleon and I had heard that Makawao was a good place to look at night. One of the valets at the hotel lived there and gave me some cryptic directions to streets where I wouldn't bother people by driving at night. He said that they kind of glow white when a flashlight hits them.

I didn't find any and a guy in the neighborhood was pretty pissed that we were looking. When he was convinced we were just tourists he explained that many drug addicts hunt them to sell for cash and their numbers are way down from a few years ago.

The next day the valet who helped me out said he had two in his yard when he got home, so I guess they're not all gone.

If you head that way make sure to eat at Polli's - it was actually reasonably priced food which is more rare than snakes on the island!!!

Other than that I just looked for eels and sharks - I was much more successful with that.

good luck,

Jake
