Anyone use Big Apple's heat cord?

mandi Jul 23, 2005 04:09 PM

We're building a new rack system for some ball pythons, and I wanted to use heat cord instead of tape. I've heard a few good things about Big Apples stuff, but that cord looks pretty small.

My question is do you think in a room that's about 70 degrees that cord could heat up the rack enough for ball pythons? That's a pretty big difference in temps. The cord would be controlled with our helix unit.

Anyone? Or if anyone else knows of another heat cord product that works well. Someone told me heat cord from a plant store but I wasn't sure.

Thank you,
mandi

I use a heat cable that is very thick. I purchased it from both the Bean Farm (not on their price list) as well as from Bush Herpetological. I use it with a Helix as well but for my incubator. It keeps the incubator, which is 6'x3'2', within 1 degree F. Sorry I do not recall the name but it is thick, orange, and ~25'.

I use quite a bit of Big Apple stuff because they are close to where I live and I get everything next day that I order from them.

I have used almost every type of heating device and controller that they sell.

On some of my racks I have used the heat rope and some the heat tape. It depends on my application but I use the heat rope back and forth to create a heating grid. I like that it is completely waterproof and ready to go.

I have my ropes running about 1 year now so I can't give you information as to longevity but I can tell you that I am currently satisfied with the product. As far as price, well they have a 25% off deal if you buy two or more so the price per foot becomes ridiculously cheap if you go for 2 or more.

The nice thing about heat cord is that you can make a grid design exactly where you want heat - you're not limited to a certain width as with heat tape.

The other nice thing is that it works very well.

The bad thing is that it takes alot of work routing grooves for the stuff or taping it under cages. But if you are willing, it is worth it.

I use it for adult Children's python cages, and I like it alot better than Flexwatt for my application. I also run the excess length of cord up the cage wall to heat the back, which helps keep the air temp higher than the room temp when it is cool in the room. One device heats floor and air. Nice.

Good luck with your setup.

I have heat cable on my Vision rack and like it a lot. I really like how you can add as little or as much as you need.

I have not truely tested it, but I did have one power outage a while back and only had the heat cable heating one rack of snakes. Their cages were remarkably warm despite the 55* ambient temperature in my snake room.
