Young Trans-Pecos Rat Snakes - observation

rpelaez Jul 23, 2005 05:15 PM

While in Texas this year I collected a few neonate Trans-Pecos Rat Snakes. Normally, I don't run into problems feeding these rat snakes, but both refused thawed pre-frozen pinks or fuzzies. It wasn't until I tried scenting the thawed pinky with Merriam's Canyon Lizard that the ratsnakes exhibited strong interest in their prey item. This canyon lizard is a small sceloporus found within the immediate area of the two rat snakes that were collected, and is one of several lizards I keep on ice to help me scent over alterna from lizards to mice. I normally don't post comments on this forum but I thought someone might find this observation interesting or helpful.

I have heard the same thing from other suboc breeders. Thanks for the second witness.
