(Het for) Golden corn eggs are pipping!!! YEESSSS!!! (65 day wait is over!)

BlueKing Jul 23, 2005 06:06 PM

Well, the moment I've been waiting for HAS finally arrived!!! A moment I will NEVER FORGET! (I've had the WHOLE entire house set at 82 degrees for two months to make sure nothing got messed up LOL!) 65 days and five of them have their heads sticking out. As you can see by the pic they all have red and gray background on them (all normals). I will post more pics tomorrow (when the rest of them pip, and some may be out of their eggs by then as well)
WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! THE BIRTH OF THE GOLDEN CORN!!!

Zee, thanks for sharing! I am SO looking forward to seeing what the babies look like (even though they're probably normal), but I'm even more looking forward to watching your progress with the babies over the years and seeing the culimination of this project 4 or 5 years from now!

Thanks Sasheena! I'm really looking forward to this as well! I'm just glad step one is complete, in case anything were to happen to mom - (God forbid!). As of this writing I have 10 pipped and three more to go. One has left the egg already and he looks like a miami phase corn. . . I'll send pics tomorrow afternoon,

Thanks Brian. I am really looking forward to this and will give it my best effort. Always dreamed of an opportunity like this and now I have one! I'm just glad that the first step is done (getting live babies out of those eggs. So far 10 have pipped, and one has actually left the egg. That one looks like a miami phase corn. I'll post more pics tomorrow. (I'm a little busy and got to get to bed now. Got some things to do tomorrow!

Just curious what your breeding plans are... Keep and breed all of the babies to each other and back to the mother? So I can expect you to mail me a real golden corn in about 2 years right?

AS a matter of fact that IS exactly my plans and I will keep you posted. I'm also thinking about power feeding one of them (the biggest male) and breeding him to his mother in late spring next year!

phiber_optikx Jul 24, 2005 08:27 PM

So have you sexed them yet or are you going to wait a few months? what are the sexes if you have?

That is great! I bet you must have been on "pins & needles" waiting to see if they were going to hatch OK. I am glad that it worked out well for you. WOW, keeping the entire house at 82 degrees all summer! You sure weren't going to take any chances. LOL.

Best of luck with the feeding and such.

BlueKing Jul 24, 2005 07:13 PM

Thank you.
Now comes phase 2: Trying to get them all to eat! Hopefully they will all be good eaters!

No one wants golden corns to be simple recessive more than I do, but I think this could be slightly premature. I mean, the gold could still develop in their adult colors. Didn't you catch another corn near that area that was golden, but less so than the one you just bred? So it still might be one of those traits that you have to selectively breed for, right?

BlueKing Jul 24, 2005 07:15 PM

No, the female I got WAS the only one. EVER! I have caught others near the same spot, but they were all normals.

Zee

raisnok Jul 24, 2005 07:53 PM

you know i wonder, if she would be considered like a "freak" of nature being a different color.
also i guess we all know there is another corn snake running around in the wild carrying that gene....right?

phiber_optikx Jul 24, 2005 08:30 PM

that is why he bred it to a male caught nearby. And YES there could be hets if they survived to adulthood! But good luck finding JUST the right baby! It's like finding hay in a needlestack!
