Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons as first snake?

Gpoop Jul 23, 2005 06:54 PM

Hi, I've been looking into getting a snake for a few months now and I'm just looking into my options as far as good first snakes go. Anyway I looked at ball pythons, redtail boas,Duremil's(spelling) boas,Mexican boas, basiclly all the BCI boas, and I almost settled on buy a rainbow boa but the constant high humidity is putting me off a bit. I curently have a redfoot and russian tortoises and a bearded dragon. I recently developed an interest in Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons. I know that they are smaller then the normal jungle carpets and I was wondering if one would be a good beginner snake? Are they nippy? If I buy from a good breeder will it be tame before he sells it to me? Also any info you can give me(sites with care sheets,breeders,etc..)about them would be grealty appreciated. Thanks

Irian Jayas are great snakes.Check out acreptiles.com for info. NERD also has some good care sheets. Any hatchling can be nippy, as they are on the menu of many other critters when in the wild. They outgrow the nippy stage pretty quickly w/ regular handling. These little nips don't amount to much. It's actually kind of neat to see them acting all spunky...I'd go with a hatchie. Most of them grow to be great trustworthy pets.Good luck!
