Tadpole to Bullfrog metamorpasis pics (and question)

Lyn Jul 23, 2005 09:22 PM

I was buying pond plants at a local nursery for my turtle pool and spotted a tank of Bullfrog Tadpoles. I thought it would be fun to add some to the pool, so I bought 3 of them. They didn't bother the turtles, and the turtles didn't bother them. I really enjoyed having them out there. A few weeks ago, they grew back legs. Then, in no time flat, they turned into frogs. I could not believe the speed at which they grew! I had to take them out of the pool or they could have just jumped out on their own. I have no wetlands nearby, so if they jumped out they would not have survived. I set them up in my reptile room (ie basement) in 3 rubbermaid tubs. Problem is, now they won't eat. I think as tadpoles in the pool they ate alot of plant material and algae. They pooped alot and it was green. There is no algae in their new tubs. I've tried crickets, wax worms, red worms, blood worms, fish food, and tadpole/frog food. I don't know what else to offer them??? Any suggestions would be most welcome.

The setups are simple for now, they are still very aquatic so it's mostly water with a raised platform if they want out, and some plastic plants for them to hang out on. The bins are w/in reach of my utility sink and I can easily drain, clean, fill them with a Python. I'll get more creative with the enclosures down the road.

This is one of them on July 16th, still had his tail...

This is the SAME frog just two days later...

And again, three days after that...

This one was the last to morph, I took this photo on July 18th when I still had him living in the outdoor pool since he had no front legs so could not really jump out of the pool...

Imagine my surprise when I went out 4 days later to see him sitting out of the water on FOUR legs!!! The front legs in this photo are literally only 4 days or less old.

I don't think I'll ever get over how fast these guys changed once they got started.

Please let me know what I need to do to get them to eat. And any suggestions on sprucing up their enclosures while keeping them easy to clean would be great. I have over 70 animals, so keeping enclosures easy to clean is extremely important. But I want them to be happy and to thrive too.

This weekend my duaghter picked up a bunch of bull frog tadpoles at a local stream. Any ideas on what they can eat now and when they turn into Frogs? I have read that the tadpoles each lettuce, but the info I have says to boil the lettuce and freeze it. I'm not sure why. I think that would take away the vitamins. I have turtles and they love fresh romaine lettuce. Please give me any ideas.
