Patience is certainly an asset...
Herps tend to pop up when you least expect them- and most
inattentive people simply don't notice them as they walk past...
These hot dry months are among the least productive...
Flip logs... and put them back... for small terrestrial snakes put out boards in woods and grassy areas and check them about every third weekend.
The two sizes that work well for me are larger rectangles about 4' by 5' or larger single boards like 8 feet of 2x10 or 2x12, basically you need something that will trap humidity underneath.
Get a reasonable substitute for a snake hook (ie potato hook) and turn over piles of leaves, etc (note I recommend using a tool to do that, we have tons of black widows around here in Central NC let alone copperheads).
I find most small snakes in the spring, also I tend to rake up several small snakes each fall raking my yard.
Also my Dekay's has a srong preference for small (like about it's body diameter) slugs, just FYI
