Wild melanistic

caecilianman02 Jul 23, 2005 10:52 PM

This is a wild melanistic garter that I found with about 13 regular garters the other day on the Ohio mud flats. It was gravid and had a stub tail. I have never seen a snake deficate so much. It was really freaked out, and bit me several times, so I very gently restrained it behind the head for the pictures. It was released immediately after the photos were taken.

Hi Lyn,

In answer to your question, I have not updated my signature in quite awhile. The babies were actually perhaps the first known intergrades between the Eastern ribbon snake, and the Florida blue garter snake. The mother was the garter, and she had been eating more ravenously than any other snake I had ever kept. I did not consider the fact that she may have been a mother, because she was so large, and at Markheim's where I bought her, the tank was labeled "all male." Therefore, I was not waiting for anything, and by the time I went in to do some work on the vivarium, I found maybe 8 baby snakes within the amniotic sacs, dried up under the heat lamp.
I also have some good news- that rare smooth earth snake that I have is still gravid, and due any day! My red-cheek eggs are also hatching. I will try to get out to Reinstein sometime soon. Happy herping.
