Steve - Gecko etc.

Jilazee Jul 16, 2003 07:08 AM

Just saw these and thought hmmm...

One leo with an eye deformity Steve things is caused through vitamin deficiency in the mother.
One leo missing its 1st tail from Steve. Heck I know this happens to lots of geckos but two posts about the health of Leos both from the same breeder.......

Just thought I'd put them in the same post to see what people think.

He probably sold a ton of leos at the show, and with the amount of leos being sold, there's bound to be problems with some of them. I've had a very good experience buying from Steve. I bout a pair of Rainwater albino het patternless from him and they are two of my best eaters. They keep on getting bigger and bigger and the male has even developed a carrothead.

I wouldn't be too alarmed, especially if you didn't buy from him. I don't even know who he is, but wouldn't hesitate if he had something I liked just because he had sold a gecko with an eyelid problem and a regen tail. As we all know, tails can and do fall off. I have a gecko who lost her tail in April for absolutely no apparent reason. It was pretty disturbing to open her enclosure to find a big, fat tail sitting up on the hidebox, let me tell you. She's kept alone and I still for the life of me can't figure out why it happened, so I'll just chalk it up as 'one of those things'. It happens a lot more with hatchlings caged together, I'm told, but really not something to worry about. Really, I'd look at it as one gecko, because the regen is a non-issue.

Especially as Robert points out that this guy sold many geckos at the recent show, it makes sense people will want to comment on what they bought there.

The problem with the deformed one is that the buyer came here and said "he assured me that it was because of a vitamin deficiency in the mother and it was not genetic"

Tails can be dropped for many reasons. Deformities can happen for many reasons. Many of those reasons are good enough NOT to support a particular breeder.

I've heard great things about Steve @ Geckos Etc and really feel the thread about his selling deformed geckos was a misunderstanding. But it appears the buyer purchased the deformed gecko with the intention of getting a good deal on breeders, and asked Steve questions which were not answered with PET ONLY as I feel they should have been treated as long as their quality of life was not going to be diminished.

Yes, however I was simply asking if anyone else had herd of this or if it happened to anyone else since he himself was unclear as to why it happened and he himself asked others opinions as to this babys problem?

I was simply asking him if he knew if it was genitic and he stated no! I never bought this baby gecko with anything in mind except it was really nice looking and for that price why not! Some people asumed I just bought it for breeding because of the questions I asked Steve and got all upset. I just wanted to get as much info on the baby and it's background as possible as I do all my pets that I buy from anyone, it's important to me. I knew nothing of this problem of even how it happened only what he told me.

I even had someone accuse me of buying deformed babies with only the intent to breed them!!

My little one that I bought is chowing down it's food and it's eyes are fine. I got alot of mixed responses as of what may have caused it and thats why I asked, just to get feed back. I have no plans down the line for the little one as for we are simply enjoying him every day.

I take great pride in my reptiles and my breeding!!

I have a little baby just about to hatch any day our first and my family is so excited especially my children we can't waite.
