New plants. Repotting question.

jonpcab Jul 24, 2005 02:30 AM

yesterday I went to home depot and bought all new plants for my veiled, Dr. Gonzo. A couple of different dracaenas, palms, and boston ferns. I repotted them in nice pots with rocks at the bottom for better drainage. I never used to repot them so I'm just curious how long should I wait and lett he plants "settle" before I put them in the chams cage?

As long as the leaves are cleaned off you could put them right in the cage. Expect some leaf loss as the plants acclimate too.

Next time you repot some plants you should omit putting rocks in the bottom. Everywhere I go people tell you to use rocks or gravel to help with drainage but the opposite is true, gravel and rocks will actually slow drainage, the reason being for water to entire the macropores created by the rocks the soil has to reach supersaturation ie. drenched, if the rocks weren't there water just start draing at normal saturation ie. just being wet enough to have water pulled down through by gravity. Sounds weird but we had to watch a long boring video about it in my soils class last year were they demonstrated how much more water logged soil has to be to enter into the gravel. If you are just worried about soil loss through the bottom of the pot you can just cut some fiberglass windowscreen to fit in the bottom.
