cost effective housing for a dozen corns?

amayon Jul 24, 2005 04:17 AM

I am thinking of getting several hatchlings next year, maybe 5 or 6, and Im wondering what is a more cost effective way to house them than to buy $40 tanks or those $300 drawer set ups? I want room to expand also, as I want to try breeding in a couple years

Can I just buy rubbermaid storage things w lids of sufficient size for an adult corn and stick an UTH under them? Or will that melt the plastic? Are they secure? Any ideas would be great. thanks

Build yourself a rack system! The best way to go when you have more than just a few snakes and limited room.
Here is a pic of my first one. I have 2 and will be building a 3rd one in the near future.

so the UTHs will not mess up or melt those plastic bins? What are they, rubbermaid? where do you put the heating? Is that plywood?

Im NOT real handy with a hammer or nails.... couldnt i just get those kind of bins w/ lids and just weigh the lids down so they cant push out? and then drill holes in the sides obviously......

if I did that set up, would I put the heater on the side or bottom of the bin? which is best?

The heattape can melt the plastic, if it shorts or otherwise puts out too much heat, hence they should be wired to a rheostate or thermostate to regulate the temperature. But fortunately, it isn't often that heattape overheats or at least I don't hear about it too often.

Same thing - you need to control the temperature. See Big Apple Herpetological for their proportional controller, or Helix Controls for theirs, or even use those cheaper ON/OFF units available at Big Apple and elsewhere.

Can't tell in your pic,but is that a lidless system? If so, what tolerance did you use.Are the boxes tight or is there a slight gap?
I'm going to be building a few racks soon and trying to gather info. for a good system.
Thanks, Mike

Plastic shelving units, just cut tubes to adjust height of shelves. The heat tape should not melt your containers.

Just a thought.
