Considering adding male with female gargoyle

irshprncsk Jul 24, 2005 06:33 PM

I recently acquired a nice female Gargoyle and in a few months I'd like to introduce a male. However, she has demonstrated aggression to other geckos in the past, including nearly swallowing a Peacock Day, eating the tail of a crested, and I caught her with another male crested's head in her mouth a few weeks ago (I worked at the store where I got her, and she was there since I started). Do you think it would be a problem to introduce a male with her? Would increasing habitat size improve her attitude problem? The cage she was in with the other geckos was less than 5 gallons, so you can understand why she got a little edgy. I plan to give her the nicest terrarium possible. Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks!
Kat

You need a way bigger cage an adult female gargoyle would need a 20 gal. minimum cage. A breeding pair would need a 45 gal. tank.

45 is pretty big, I've had no problem keeping pairs in 20 gallon tanks. Add a male and they should be fine.

As far as keeping them with other geckos you should have done your homework before aquiring the auriculatus.

Yes, I know she needs a bigger cage herself - but I'm in the middle of moving across the country so a 5-gallon is her travel tank. I will consider looking at something big like a 45 gal, though. I was definitely going to do at least a 20. Right now I am trying to concoct a cage in my head that I can make - like a homemade Reptarium. I don't like the unflexible designs of aquariums and I prefer to have good circulation in my cages. Thanks for the info.
