arizona herping???

sutorherp1 Jul 24, 2005 07:21 PM

Hey; I'm going to be in the Sedona area of Arizona (and a few nights in the Grand Canyon national park). Anyone here familiar with the area or places near there in Arizona that are great for herps? I'm interested in seeing as much as possible, but I'd be real interested in seeing some shovel nosed snakes and blue speckled rattle snakes. I'm just into photographing and nothing else. If you'd like to share experiances and places, please post or email me at: bigteapot@optonline.net. I'm from New Jersey and know nothing about the area. Thanks,
-Sean

I know there are definatly not specks as far north as sedona so definatly not the grand canyon. I am also pretty sure the shovelnosed snakes dont go much further north than phoenix, ask regal, hell know. It sounds like youll be way out of area for your targeted species. I have heard of the pyros being the sedona mts but I have never found on there. I have found only garter snakes in sedona. One day i was there, the ranger told me someone found a rock rattlesnake, I know it definatly wasnt a rock rattler as it is way to far north but it could have been a cerberus but i think that is even to far north. There is a nice park at the entrance to sedona (south) and they have a ton of collared lizards and zebra tail lizards but, um, thats the only place I can send ya. rootsrok

I'm staying in Sedona, but will be traveling outside of the city for herping. Thanks for the info, bieng from NJ, I honestly have no idea in region specifics of whats there. Thanks again, any more info on any great places or great herps found outside of Sedona or the Pheonix area would be great.

The AZ PARC website should help you.

Also, I would recommend purchasing the Peterson guide to western reptiles and amphibians, by Stebbins. You can order it online, but you probably won't have a hard time finding it at a major bookstore when you get to AZ.

Hiya & lucky you. thats a very scenic region youre going to, bring your camera, hit the sunny rock faces from dawn until midmorning (its mostly public land). Walk the trails (carefully flipping bark & flat rocks...& please put them back)in the stream bottoms mid-day, & roadcruise from 1 hr before sundown until 11-ish unless a heavy storm makes things too cool for everything but toads. Look at the advise Tx-H gave you, thats a good start & add a "DeLorme Az Gazeteer" to your maps to be able to find the trails & backroads...

Remember....Good luck never hurts & always complements a good plan. Probability of an encounter is directly proportional to persistance! Cheers / RxR

Thanks a ton for all your information (and TX-H, I'll look up those places and buy that book. I also share your feelings about putting back cover, I hate walking on a trail to see a piece of bark and an open cover, drives me crazy! Thanks again for all your info, hopefully I'll come across and photograph some of the area's best!
