Question about my 6 month old snake

mauwdee Jul 24, 2005 09:28 PM

Hello im a newbie at all these and have some questions about my snake. I currently own two corn snakes snow corn about year old and a butter 6 months. My butter corn is very nervous every time I handle her she is always jumpy she rattles her tail a lot and sometimes even scares herself while she rattles she taps her head and gets scared. My snow never did this she was always calm which is why I have this question.

(1) Is it just the personality of the snake has anyone else had this same experience with their young snakes????

(2) Another thing ever since I bought her, her very end of her tail looks crooked/bumpy I remember when I had her in the deli cup she kept on slamming her tail against the walls of the deli cup. Could she have hurt herself during that even before I bought her in her deli cup????

The attitude of the snake is ENTIRELY individual! My snow Hope is completely comfortable being handled. I have 2 sibling albino black rats 1.1 the female only hides after she eats and is roaming every second of her life accept for that. the male is much jumpier and is usually hiding. How long have you had your butter? I'm sure it will tame down soon enough. It may have a kink in it's tail.....these usually happen from when they were in the egg (right?) if it is a kink it will probably just cancel any breeding plans you had for it. I don't think there are many if any other ill effects to having a kink. good luck! Cant wait till I finally get a butter the tought of it makes me giddy! my list is NEXT a tangerine honduran milk, followed by a sunglow motley, and then a butter. then I will be completely satisfied! (yeah right )

having their tail shut into a deli cup top. I know that is what happened to one of mine. I think they also can get kinks if you have temperature problems during egg incubation. So it might not be genetic. If the snake eats and defecates with no problem, then I wouldn't worry about it. There MIGHT be a problem if you want to breed the snake, because of difficulties in laying eggs or in the actual breeding process, but it would depend on where the kink is and how big the kink is.

The other problem you are likely to run into with kinked tails is that sometimes the shed won't go past the kink. (Just remember to double check the tip of the tail after each shed. If the shed broke off there, a bath and (if necessary) some light rubbing will usually take off the last little bit of skin.)

When she becomes calmer as i handle her well hoping she does ill take a picture of her tail. I seem to think its a small one and it towards the very tip of the tail.

Does it seem like the bone is kinked or the fleshy tip of the tail is bumpy? I have one with a weird tale but it's from shedding poorly (obviously more than once) before I bought him. The skin toward the end of the tail is not smooth and I have to watch it every time he sheds to make sure it does retain the old skin.
