Striped pair of Apalachicola Kings

Sean Jul 24, 2005 09:45 PM

A friend of mine here just north of Tallahassee picked up this pair at a Tallahassee Reptile Expo about two years ago. He doesn't know the breeder he bought them from so I have no idea where they originated but they are interesting looking. I took these pics today. First pic is of the female.

And the male:

I was hoping he would have bred that pair this year but he never did. He doesn't take the best care of his snakes. Both could certainly need some fattening up. If he breeds them next year, I'll try to get some pics of the offspring. It will be interesting to see what they produce.

Those are very good pictures. What kind of camera did you use? Did you manually take those pictures or was it set on auto-mode. It looked like it was in the shade, you didn't use the flash though did you?

Anyway, very nice pics and beautiful Kings!

I have a Canon Digital Rebel. Those pics were taken in the shade on shutter priority with the flash on. I put the shutter speed on 125 with an ISO of 800. Both wouldn't sit still so I didn't have a whole lot of time to play with settings.

Are those as white as they appear ? Very nice. I keep thinking of the Apalachicola Carl and Dick found a long time ago and was pictured in Dick's book. That snake was as white as the driven snow and simply awesome.

They are pretty light Keith. Overall I'd say they are a very light yellow. And I asked Carl that same question about the king in Dick's book. I believe he said it was almost white as you can tell against the sand on the road.

But I find it interesting that neither of those animals have the total half black scale that some argue about. Yes they have the interlightened spot, but it's definately not split halfway.....like they are supposed to be. Very nice looking.

In the dark areas where the stripe is (also the blotches), the lighter spot isn't split halfway by a straight line. It isn't supposed to be. But in the light areas (known as the interband or space between the bands), normally the scale is split halfway by a straight line. It's definitely that way on blotched individuals but seems to be more of a curved line on some of the striped and patternless specimens.

So what you're saying is, your's are "pure" even though the straight line isn't present? Don't take this as a flame. I'm very curious as to why some "experts" on this forum say mine are hybrids when their scales look identical to the animals you posted. After all, these are as variable as variable kings get.

That striped pair isn't mine. They belong to a friend and he has no idea who the breeder was that he bought them from. I would guess they are "pure" Apalachicola Kings but with all the breeding of Brooksi/FL Kings with them, there really is no telling. Which ones in your collection are people calling hybrids?

They look exactly like some of the original W/C Bruce Means animals. Very nice.
I think I will go up and catch one this year.

Hey, when you guys find these kings, do you mind calling me and letting me know so I can at least get some pictures?

Phil Peak Jul 25, 2005 03:17 PM

I'll have to admit I'm intrigued by those patternless and striped kings from down in the ANF. Dick Bartlett tells me he has reaquired some of the stock he was working with years ago and the pics of his animals are stunning. I'm glad there are those sould out there working with this very worthy king snake. Phil
