we found 3 western aquatic garter snakes, a GORGEOUS Red Diamond back rattler, forgot the camera and words wouldnt do this fello justice, it was the most awsomest red with orange diamonds ever, so clean lookin. we also found lots of pacific tree frogs, tadpoles, and we found a horned toad, baby, not sure on exact subspecies tho. thats it! nick.

By Western Aquatic do you mean the Two-Striped Garter? Over time the Western Aquatic, Thamnophis couchii has been split into 3 different species.

1. Sierra Garter, T couchii

2. Aquatic or Pacific Coast Aquatic, T atratus, with 2 subspecies and 1 intergrade.

and

3. Two-Stripped, T hammondii, The Baja population is not longer considered a distinct subspecies. This is the garter that overlaps the range of the Red Diamondback.

There are areas of intergradation between these species but not in the southern range of T hammondii.

T hammondii was a favorite snake of mine as I grew up in S California. If you can post some pics that would be great. I would love to see them. I wanted to collect a couple but they are presently protected in California.
