feeding my European Green Toad

Adalberto Jul 25, 2005 12:35 AM

I got a beautiful "Moroccan Green Toad" (Bufo Viridis) yesterday (he/she is enjoying the cage, climbing, exploring!) I have read a lot about frogs and toads from many sources, and having seen lots of opinions around, I would like to hear more about what you think I should feed my toad. Its young, and seems pretty healthy. I think I agree with the diverse diet idea; could anyone give me opinions on the crix-to-worm ratio I should use when feeding it? I guess more crickets than worms? And which worms are better or safer to use? I'm concerned about making my toad a happy, healthy one. This being my first toad, I would deeply appreciate any advice. Many thanks!

I have two European Green Toads. I don't have a ratio of earthworms VS crickets. All I can say is that they get a variety of these and occasional bee moths and small mealworms. When I offer mealworms they're in a shallow container so they aren't able to crawl about. My toads seem to turn their noses up at redworms, so earthworms seem to be their preference as far as worms go. I also dust the crickets about every fourth feeding or so with a calcium and vitamin powder. They are pretty personable toads, so I know that you'll enjoy yours.

Thank you very much for your reply. You were very helpful (sorry for the late reply.)For now, my toad is getting five small to medium crickets per day (gut-loaded, and dusted every third day) because he/she is still young (seems a bit bigger now than a few days ago since I got it.) Hehe it seems always hungry and ready to hunt. I am now looking online to see if there is any pet store nearby NYC who sells smaller mealworms. The PETCOs here in NY only have normal sized mealworms or larger. It seems they offer a variety of worms before, but not now. If anyone has information on where to get something else besides crickets in NYC, it would be greatly appreciated (I am looking for smaller sized live food. Thanks, Turtasal, for sharing your experience with me. I will offer my green toad something else as soon as I am able. Take care!

Bufo viridis are awesome! I keep a pair, Butch & Sundance! They're not picky eaters @ all. A tip I received form a guy @ my herp club was to collect suitably sized WC bugs from clean safe nature areas, as they've been feasting on a more diverse diet (pill bugs, moths, sow bugs, etc) and are supposed to really bring out the color on these little guys.
