key ratsnake from June

mayday Jul 16, 2003 08:43 AM

Found this guy crawling out of a stone wall next to a swimming pool on Duck Key.
He was photograped as found.
The dorsal color was a beautiful pewter gray with orange blotches.
About a 3 foot male.

This is the same animal. The belly was mostly unpatterned.

Looks like it's getting ready to shed too. Good find.

Nice find. That looks like a classic "rosy" rat.

are those protected?

Steve G Jul 17, 2003 10:27 PM

The last I heard, only the "rosy" rats found in the lower Florida Keys are protected. Technically, the Marathon/Duck Key area is part of the middle keys.

Only the populations BELOW the 7 mile bridge are protected.
This one was found on Duck Key which is about 5 miles up from Marathon.
I found an identicle road kill at the south end of Long Key too.
Very dark pewter gray background with clean orange blotches and a mostly orange belly with no checkers.
