Desperate Need of Help - Constipated Beardie

bcwatson101 Jul 25, 2005 08:21 AM

I am very concerned about my adult 2yr old female bearded dragon. For at least the last three days that I have visually seen, she has been constipated and not able to pass a stool. She will lift her tale and push her hind leg up and back so she rolls on her tummy. She will try for about five minutes before giving up. She does release a lot of fluid and the white pellet. I have tried bathing her in warm water every day, massaging her tummy, and making sure she drinks lots of water to stop dehydration. Her diet has been the same over the last year: 1” crickets, super worms and mealworms with lots of varieties of greens. After feeling her tummy, I don’t think it is an impaction issue. Also, due to her older age and her hind legs are not extended backward, they are normal in stance. Is there anything else I can do for her, or should I seek help from our local reptile vet? Is there a diuretic that she can take? Please help, I can tell she is not comfortable. She has stopped eating since then and will only eat her greens. Thanks!!!!!
Brian W.

It is always a good idea to "poop" your beardie in the bathtub almost everyday. If you have not been doing this then she may have been a little freaked out about the warm water if it was one of her first ten or twenty times to be in the water. Letting her eat only green is perfectly fine. Some owners would kill to get their beardies to only eat greens, especially a wide variety. Deffinately take her to the vet ASAP because they may be able to get the stool out if she is constipated and they can test it for parasites and other things. Just because she has had a good stool doesn't mean she doesn't have any. Pin worms and coccsydia (not sure on hox u spell it) do not change the stool sometimes. Some medicines for worms give beardies a runny stool and that may be what the vet gives. Good luck and I hope she doesn't have a kink in her intestines!

I just wanted to let you know that I recently had this problem as well with my beardie. I took hinm to the vet and it turned out he had parasites, but as for the pooping, i gave him .2cc of mineral oil 3X daily for 4 days. IT HELPED!!!
